SCRIPTURE
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
INTRODUCTION
Today we celebrate Father’s Day—a day to honour not only our fathers, but also spiritual fathers and father figures who have played vital roles in our lives. Fathers are more than providers of food and shelter. They are shapers of the next generation.
In our fast-paced, digital, and often fragmented world, the real question for fathers is not, “What am I giving my children today?” but, “What legacy am I leaving for them tomorrow?”
Moses, in Deuteronomy 6, gives Israel a timeless blueprint for fathers who want to leave a lasting impact:
1. Love God wholeheartedly.
2. Teach His Word diligently.
3. Create households that reflect faith.
This is how fathers build a spiritual legacy that outlives them. Let’s look at these three truths together.
A. LOVE GOD DEEPLY
Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
The starting point of legacy is not what you do for your children, but who you are before God.
In a world of distractions—social media, career demands, financial pressures—it’s easy for fathers to get consumed with doing rather than being. But the greatest inheritance children can receive is a father who truly loves God. Money can be lost, careers can collapse, possessions can fade, but a father’s faith can never be taken away.
Proverbs 13:22 “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”
The best inheritance is not a house or bank account, but a living example of a heart on fire for God.
Children watch how their father prays, worships, forgives, and lives with integrity. Abraham’s love for God shaped Isaac’s trust in God (Genesis 22:8). David’s devotion inspired Solomon to begin his reign asking God for wisdom (1 Kings 3:7–9).
God Himself said of Abraham in
Genesis 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household… to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just.
When a father loves God deeply:
• He teaches children to stand strong in a culture that questions truth.
• He models forgiveness and grace in a world full of anger and division.
• He equips them not just to survive life but to live with eternal purpose.
Legacy always begins in the heart of a father who loves God.
B. TEACH FAITH INTENTIONALLY
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
Moses tells fathers, not to leave faith to chance, teach children diligently. Children don’t inherit faith automatically; they need it taught, modelled, and reinforced intentionally.
• God praised Abraham because he would direct his household in God’s ways (Genesis 18:19).
• Joshua boldly declared, Joshua 24:15 As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
• David charged Solomon, 1Chronicles 28:9 Serve God with wholehearted devotion.
These men didn’t assume their kids would “figure it out.” They instructed, guided, and spoke God’s truth into their lives.
Fathers today must do the same. Why? Because our children are being discipled every day—by YouTube, TikTok, Netflix, school, friends, and culture. If fathers aren’t teaching their children faith, someone else is teaching them something else.
Teaching diligently can look like:
• Having Family prayer
• Reading Scripture
• Explaining decisions through the lens of God’s Word.
• Modeling forgiveness, generosity, and integrity in daily life.
Psalm 78:4, 6 “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD… so the next generation would know them.
A father who teaches faith intentionally gives his children something greater than wealth or education: a treasure of knowing God. That faith becomes an anchor in storms and a compass for eternity.
C. LIVE FAITH PRACTICALLY
Deuteronomy 6:8–9 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand… write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Faith was never meant to be private or hidden. It should be visible, practical, and central in the home. Children quickly spot hypocrisy—when Dad talks about God on Sunday but ignores Him the rest of the week.
James 2:17 warns: Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
The most powerful lessons children learn about God are the ones they see lived out daily:
• Noah obeyed God and built the ark despite ridicule, saving his family (Genesis 6:22).
• Abraham trusted God’s provision when tested with Isaac (Genesis 22:8).
• Job prayed continually for his children (Job 1:5).
• Joseph protected Mary and Jesus by obeying God immediately (Matthew 2:13–14).
Paul put it simply in
1 Corinthians 11:1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
When fathers live faith practically, children inherit not only instructions but a pattern of life. They see that God is not distant but active in everyday moments—guiding, protecting, providing, and leading.
Children may forget the words their father spoke, but they will never forget the faith he lived.
CONCLUSION
Deuteronomy 6 is crystal clear: a father’s greatest responsibility is not just to provide money, education, or comfort — but to pass on a living faith.
Fathers leave legacies by:
A. Loving God deeply – modelling devotion and passion for Him.
B. Teaching faith intentionally – weaving God’s Word into everyday life.
C. Living faith practically – embodying consistency and authenticity.
Fathers, the future of your children is shaped by what you do today. Legacy is not just about inheritance—it’s about influence. Your prayers, your example, your faith can echo for generations.
And here’s the hope: Even if you feel you’ve failed in the past, God — the Perfect Father — offers grace and a fresh start. He promises in
2 Corinthians 6:18 I will be a Father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
So this Father’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to leaving a legacy not of possessions, but of faith, love, and godly influence that will draw the next generation closer to God.
