SCRIPTURE
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

INTRODUCTION
Many believers imagine heaven with one crown for every child of God. But the New Testament reveals something deeper. Scripture speaks of five crowns
• not all the same,
• not given for the same reason, and
• not received in the same way.

These crowns are not the basis of our salvation. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8–9). But after salvation, the Bible teaches that the life we live for Christ matters. Our faithfulness matters. Our endurance matters. Our service matters. Our longing for His appearing matters.

Paul says:
1 Corinthians 9:24 “Run in such a way that you may obtain it.”

There is a race to run. There is a reward to receive. There is a crown to be gained.

But the question is not only, “Will I go to heaven?” The deeper question is, “What will I carry into heaven to lay at the feet of Jesus?”
• You will not carry your money through that gate.
• You will not carry your titles through that gate.
• You will not carry your house, your achievements, your reputation, or your earthly status through that gate.
But the life you lived for Christ the sacrifices, the obedience, the tears, the souls, the faithfulness, the love, these things are remembered in heaven.

So today, let us look at the five crowns mentioned in Scripture.

1. THE IMPERISHABLE CROWN — The Crown That Never Fades
1 Corinthians 9:25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.

In Paul’s day, athletes competed in the ancient games. The winner received a wreath made of leaves. For a moment, people cheered, applauded, and celebrated. But within days, that wreath began to fade, the leaves dried, the colour disappeared, and the crown crumbled.

Paul looked at that and said, “They do all that for a crown that perishes. But we live for a crown that will never fade.” This is the crown of discipline, self-control, and spiritual endurance.

It is for the believer who says no to the flesh, who keeps praying when nobody sees, who chooses holiness in private, who refuses compromise and who runs the race with focus.

Paul says:
1 Corinthians 9:27 “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection.”

This crown is not usually won in one dramatic moment, but in a number of hidden moments.
• When you wanted to give up but kept going.
• When you wanted to sin but chose obedience.
• When you wanted to speak harshly but held your tongue.
• When you wanted to follow the crowd but followed Christ.
• When nobody clapped, nobody noticed, nobody thanked you, but heaven saw.

Ask yourself a question: are you living for a crown that fades, or a crown that never fades?

2. THE CROWN OF REJOICING — The Soul Winner’s Crown
1 Thessalonians 2:19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?

This crown is different because it is not only about you. It is about the people you helped bring to Jesus. Paul looked at the Thessalonian believers and said, “You are my crown. you are my joy.”

Imagine that moment in heaven, when you are standing before the Lord, and suddenly someone comes to you and says:
• “Because of your prayer, I came back to God.”
• “Because of your encouragement, I did not give up.”
• “Because you shared the Gospel with me, I found Jesus.”
• “You may not remember me, but one word you spoke changed my life.”

That is the Crown of Rejoicing. It is the crown connected to evangelism, witness, encouragement, and spiritual influence.
Daniel 12:3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.

Dear beloved, every soul matters to God.
• The person in your workplace matters
• The neighbour across the street matters.
• The family member far from God matters.
• The young person confused and broken matters.
• The patient in the hospital matters.
• The prisoner behind bars matters.
• The elderly person in aged care matters.

Sometimes we think only preachers win souls. It is not so, every believer is called to be a witness.
• A mother can win her children to Christ.
• A friend can win another friend.
• A chaplain can point a hurting person to hope.
• A worship leader can lead someone into God’s presence.
• A quiet Christian can shine so faithfully that others begin to ask, “What is different about you?”

Ask yourself a question: Who will be in heaven because you shared your testimony, prayed, loved, encouraged, or pointed them to Jesus?

3. THE CROWN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS — The Crown for Those Who Love His Appearing
2 Timothy 4:8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

Paul wrote these words near the end of his life. He was in prison. He knew his death was near. He said:
2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Then he said, “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness.” But notice who receives this crown.
• It is not given simply to those who talk about prophecy.
• It is not given simply to those who know end-times charts.
• It is not given simply to those who argue about the last days.
• It is given to those who love His appearing.

That means they are waiting for Jesus with longing, expectation, holiness, and readiness. Some people are afraid of the Lord’s coming because they are too attached to this world. But the true believer says, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

To love His appearing means we live differently.
• We forgive quickly because Jesus is coming.
• We stay pure and holy because Jesus is coming.
• We share the Gospel and win souls because Jesus is coming.

The early church lived with the expectation that Christ could return, which gave them courage in persecution, strength to overcome temptation, and urgency in mission.
Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

The return of Jesus is not meant to frighten the faithful. It is meant to purify them, strengthen them, and fill them with hope.

Ask yourself a question: do you love His appearing, or are you secretly hoping He delays because your heart is too tied to this world?

4. THE CROWN OF LIFE — The Crown for Those Who Endure
James 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Revelation 2:10 …Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

This is the crown for those who suffer, remain faithful under pressure and endure till the end. It is the crown for the believer who says, “I do not understand what is happening, but I will not let go of God.”

It is the crown for the person who has been tested, wounded, rejected, misunderstood, persecuted, or stretched beyond what seemed fair but never let goes of God.
• Job lost everything, yet he declared:
Job 13:15 “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.”
• Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, thrown into a pit, sold as a slave, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison. But he did not let bitterness destroy his faith.
• Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den because he refused to stop praying. But he remained faithful.
• Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood before the fiery furnace and said:
Daniel 3:17-18 “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods.”

That is the spirit of the Crown of Life. The Crown of Life is not for those who had an easy road, but for those who held on when holding on was costly.

Ask yourself a question: has your faith cost you something? Have you endured? Have you remained faithful through the fire?

The Lord knows every battle and remembers every silent act of faithfulness. And He says, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

5. THE CROWN OF GLORY — The Shepherd’s Crown
1 Peter 5:4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

This crown is connected to shepherding God’s people. Peter was speaking especially to elders and leaders, but the principle reaches every person who faithfully cares for others in the spirit of Christ.

This is the crown for shepherds. Not only pastors, but spiritual mothers, spiritual fathers, mentors, chaplains, leaders, intercessors, Sunday school teachers, worship leaders, small group leaders, carers, and faithful believers who look after the souls of others.
• It is for those who care.
• It is for those who lead without pride.
• It is for those who serve without demanding applause.
• It is for those who feed the flock, protect the wounded, restore the fallen, and guide the weak.

Peter says shepherds must not serve by compulsion, not for dishonest gain, but as examples to the flock (1 Peter 5:2–3).

This crown is for those who carry the heart of the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Jesus said:
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”

True shepherding costs something. It costs time, it costs tears, it costs patience, but also the hidden sacrifice. But heaven is watching the quiet shepherds.
• The one who visits the sick.
• The one who prays for the broken.
• The one who encourages the discouraged.
• The one who carries people in prayer.
• The one who serves faithfully when nobody says thank you.

The Chief Shepherd sees. And when He appears, He will give the Crown of Glory that does not fade away.

Ask yourself a question: who are you shepherding? Who are you caring for?

THE CROWNS ARE NOT THE FINAL POINT
In Revelation 4, John sees a vision of the throne room of heaven. Around the throne are twenty-four elders clothed in white robes, with crowns on their heads. But then something happens.
Revelation 4:10 “The twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne.”

They receive crowns, but they do not keep them. They cast them before the throne. Why? Because when you finally see Jesus, you will realise that every crown was only possible because of Him.
• If you lived disciplined, it was His grace.
• If you won souls, it was His grace.
• If you loved His appearing, it was His grace.
• If you endured suffering, it was His grace.
• If you shepherded others, it was His grace.

So the crowns are for His glory. We will not walk around heaven boasting, “Look what I earned, look at my crown?” But we will fall before the Lamb and say:
• “Lord, every victory came from You.”
• “Every sacrifice was sustained by You.”
• “Every soul was saved by You.”
• “Every trial was endured because You held me.”
• “Every act of service was empowered by Your Spirit.”

Then we will cast our crowns before Him and declare:
Revelation 4:11 You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; …

The crowns are not the end of worship. They become part of worship.
We receive them from Him, and then we return them to Him.

Do not spend rest of your life chasing crowns that fade.
• The crown of money will fade.
• The crown of popularity will fade.
• The crown of position and power will fade.
• The crown of human applause will fade.
• The crown of earthly success will fade.

But what is done for Christ will remain.
• One day, the race will be over.
• One day, the battle will be finished.
• One day, the trumpet will sound.
• One day, the Chief Shepherd will appear.
• One day, we will stand before the Lord.

And on that day, the question will not be, “How famous were you?”
The question will not be, “How rich were you?”
The question will not be, “How many people applauded you?”
The question will be, “Were you faithful?”

Today, the Holy Spirit is calling us back to eternal living.
• Some of us need to repent because we have been chasing fading crowns.
• Some of us have lost spiritual discipline.
• Some of us have stopped witnessing.
• Some of us no longer long for the return of Jesus.
• Some of us are tired from suffering and feel like letting go.
• Some of us have been serving people, but our hearts are weary.

Today, the Lord is saying, “Do not give up. Your labour is not in vain.”
1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

• Your labour is not in vain.
• Your prayers are not in vain.
• Your tears are not in vain.
• Your sacrifice is not in vain.
• Your endurance is not in vain.
• Your hidden obedience is not in vain.

Heaven has seen it all, and on that day, you will cast every crown at the feet of Jesus, because He alone is worthy. Amen.
