SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 42:16 I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, And crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, And not forsake them.
INTRODUCTION
One of the greatest fears in life is stepping into the unknown. We are comfortable when we can see the road ahead, when plans are clear, and when results are predictable. They give us a sense of safety.
But there are times when the future feels unclear. We are facing a new year. This year, God is speaking to us.
Isaiah 42:16 I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, And crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, And not forsake them.
During this year, when we feel uncertain, confused, or overwhelmed. God promises us, “I will lead you.”
He promises His presence and His guidance. He assures us that, even when the path is unfamiliar and the future is unclear, God will lead us.
As we reflect on this promise today, let us listen carefully to what God is saying to us, “I will lead you.”
1. GOD LEADS WHEN WE CANNOT SEE
Isaiah 41:16 “I will lead the blind…”
This blindness speaks of human limitation. For example,
• Not knowing what decision to make
• Not understanding why certain things happened
• Not seeing what comes next
All of us face those moments, but God says, “I will lead you.”
Apostle Paul on the Damascus Road (Acts 9)
Paul was educated and was confident about his direction in life until he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. In that moment, Paul lost his physical sight and became utterly dependent on others. For three days, he sat in darkness, unsure of what his future would be. Paul did not know:
• What is his calling?
• whether he would live or die
• how his life would unfold
Yet God was not absent. God guided Paul step by step:
• He spoke to Ananias
• He restored Paul’s sight
• He redirected Paul’s life
What looked like blindness became the doorway to a life with purpose. Paul’s inability to see ahead did not stop God’s plan—it positioned him to receive it.
When God says, “I will lead the blind,” He is promising:
• guidance when you are unsure
• direction when the path is unclear
• His presence when we have no confidence
2. GOD LEADS US ON UNFAMILIAR PATHS
Isaiah 42:16 “…by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them.”
We may think following God means life will always be predictable, with clear steps, smooth transitions, and no surprises. But Scripture shows us that God often leads His people to places they have never been before to grow them and reveal Himself more deeply to them.
Unfamiliar paths speak of
• having no previous experience to rely on
• Your usual methods don’t work
• Your confidence is tested
• You must depend on God more than your own understanding
It can include:
• a new year with uncertainty
• a health situation you didn’t plan for
• a new job, or financial pressure
• spiritual stretching—where God calls you deeper
When you are going through an unfamiliar path, answers, not always with explanation, but with guidance: “I will guide you.”
• Unfamiliar paths train us to trust God – When we don’t know the route, we learn to depend on God.
Proverbs 3:5–6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He shall direct your paths.”
• Unfamiliar paths help us know God – He shows Himself as provider, protector, wisdom and peace.
• Unfamiliar paths prepare us for new assignments with purpose
Illustration: Abraham (Genesis 12)
In Genesis 12, God said to Abraham:
“Go from your country… to the land I will show you.”
Notice what God did not give Abraham:
• a detailed map
• a timeline
• a full explanation
• proof of what the land looked like
God gave Abraham a promise. Abraham had to decide: Will I trust what I see, or will I trust what God says?
Hebrews 11:8 – “He went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Abraham’s unfamiliar path was the pathway to:
• covenant blessing
• spiritual inheritance
• God’s unfolding plan for generations
The unfamiliar path became the most meaningful path in Abraham’s life. It is knowing “If God is leading, it is safe, even if it is unfamiliar.”
God sees the end from the beginning and the hidden dangers you and I cannot see.
So when God says, “I will guide,” He is not only giving direction—He is taking responsibility for your journey.
When you enter unfamiliar paths, you may feel nervous, uncertain, or tempted to return to what is comfortable. You may not know what 2026 holds, but God is the One guiding you through it.
And because He goes ahead of you, you never walk a road He has not already seen.
3. GOD TURNS DARKNESS INTO LIGHT
Isaiah 42:16 “I will turn the darkness into light before them…”
Darkness in Scripture often represents seasons when life feels heavy. It can include
• fear about the future,
• confusion about decisions, or
• questions that have no immediate answers.
God does not promise that His people will never experience darkness. He says, “I will turn darkness into light.”
What Does It Mean for God to Turn Darkness into Light?
• God brings understanding where there is confusion – Darkness is often a lack of clarity. We may not understand why God brings light by giving wisdom, insight, and direction. It provides enough understanding to take the next step.
• God brings hope where there is fear – When we cannot see what lies ahead, God’s light brings assurance, reminding us that He is present, in control, and changes the way we face fear.
• God brings His presence into our pain – When God turns darkness into light, He is not simply fixing a situation, but brings awareness that God is with us.
Illustration: Israel at the Red Sea
The people of Israel stood trapped before the Red Sea
• The Red Sea was in front of them
• The Egyptian army was behind them
• Fear filled their hearts
There was no visible escape, no clear solution, and no time to plan, because this was a moment of total darkness for them.
What seemed like the end became a place of deliverance. God opened a path through the sea, turning a moment of fear into a testimony of salvation.
God led them through the Red Sea. They still had to walk forward step by step. But now they walked with light, direction, and assurance.
In the same way:
• God may not remove every challenge immediately
• God may not explain everything at once
• God may not change circumstances overnight
• But He gives enough light to move forward without fear.
When you are facing darkness, God has not forgotten you, nor will He abandon you.
The promise of Isaiah 42:16 assures us that darkness is not permanent. God uses dark moments to reveal His guidance, His power, and His presence. He will give light in the darkness we are facing.
4. GOD MAKES THE ROUGH PLACES SMOOTH
Isaiah 42:16 “…and make the rough places smooth.”
God does not promise a trouble-free life. But God openly acknowledges that the 2026 journey will include rough places marked by obstacles, delays, resistance, and hardship. Rough places slow our progress, make our efforts feel unrewarded, and test our strength.
When God says He will make the rough places smooth, He is saying that what threatens to stop you will not destroy you, and what feels impossible will not remain that way forever.
Rough places can be
• Repeated delays and closed doors
• Ongoing struggles that don’t resolve quickly
• unfair treatment or misunderstanding
• emotional weariness or spiritual dryness
• situations where effort seems greater than results
In these moments, people feel tempted to give up and lose hope. Yet God declares, “I am at work here and will make the rough places smooth.”
When God smooths the rough path,
• He ensures that nothing essential to His purpose will stop you.
• What once felt unbearable becomes manageable because God strengthened you when you walked through it.
• God uses rough places in your life to build character, maturity, and discernment that are qualities necessary for the future He is preparing in you.
Illustration: Joseph’s Life (Genesis 37–50)
Joseph’s story is one of the clearest examples of rough places made smooth over time. Joseph’s journey included:
• betrayal by his own brothers
• being sold into slavery
• false accusations
• years of imprisonment
Joseph’s life looked like one setback after another. Nothing was smooth. Nothing was quick. Nothing was fair. Yet the Bible repeatedly says, “The Lord was with Joseph.”
God did not remove Joseph from hardship, but
• In slavery, God gave him favour
• In prison, God gave him responsibility
• In waiting, God gave him wisdom
• In time, God elevated Joseph to a place of leadership where he could save many lives—including the very family who had betrayed him.
Joseph later said to his brothers: “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20)
God smooths the rough path not by removing difficulty, but by bringing us through it with purpose and with the best outcome.
The God who led Joseph and fulfilled His promises through hardship now works in your life and will smooth every rough path throughout 2026. Amen.
5. GOD WILL NOT FORSAKE YOU
Isaiah 42:16 “These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.”
He speaks in promises. God declares:
• I will lead.
• I will guide.
• I will turn darkness into light.
• I will make the rough places smooth.
• I will not forsake them.
When God says He will not forsake us, He is saying:
• I will not walk away when things get difficult.
• I will not leave you halfway through the journey.
• I will not give up on you when you struggle or fail.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly reassures His people with this same promise:
• To Moses: “I will be with you.”
• To Joshua: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
• To Israel in exile: “Do not fear, for I am with you.”
• To the disciples: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Because God will not forsake you:
• You are never walking alone
• You are never forgotten
• You are never abandoned mid-process
Even when prayers feel unanswered, progress moves slowly, and faith feels weak, God remains unchanged and faithful. He leads, guides, transforms, prepares the way, and never forsakes His people.
So we walk forward with confidence, not because we are strong, but because God remains unchanged throughout 2026.
CONCLUSION
Isaiah 42:16 I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, And crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, And not forsake them.
This verse reminds us of five unshakable truths:
• When we cannot see, God leads – When our understanding is limited, and our vision is blurred, God steps in as our leader to lead us.
• When the path is unfamiliar, God guides – What feels unfamiliar to us is fully known to Him. He guides us step by step, even when we cannot see the whole journey.
• When life feels dark, God brings light – Darkness does not have the final word. Fear, grief, confusion, and unanswered questions are not permanent conditions. God turns darkness into light so that we can move forward with hope.
• When the journey is rough, God smooths the way – God does not remove every obstacle, but He ensures that obstacles will not defeat us. When hardship and resistance confront us, He makes a way forward.
• And when we feel alone, God does not forsake us – God does not withdraw when we struggle, fail, or grow weary. His presence is constant, His commitment unbroken.
We have stepped into this new year with confidence that God will lead you.
We may not know the way ahead.
We may not have answers to every question.
We may not see how everything will unfold.
But we know the One who leads us.
So let us move forward holding firmly to the God who leads, guides, brings light, smooths the way, and never forsakes His people.
